Skin Cancer - Types, Risks, Symptoms And Treatment

by Michael Russell

Obviously, the topmost layers of the skin are the first to be affected; the three major types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma (rodent ulcer), squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, all develop in the upper layer of the skin known as the epidermis. Basal cell carcinoma, the most frequent of the three, causes local erosions of tissue if neglected, while squamous cell carcinoma may spread if untreated. Fortunately, both these types can be successfully treated in nearly all cases. Squamous cell carcinoma sometimes occurs on the vulva in women after menopause and may be more difficult to deal with.

Melanoma, the least common of the three, occurs more frequently in sunny countries. Although a certain amount of sun on the skin is beneficial because it forms vitamin D, too much is dangerous. The danger has increased now that high levels of ultraviolet A radiation are reaching the earth's surface from the sun due to depletion of the ozone layer by flurocarbon chemicals from widespread use of spray cans. Melanomas are the most serious of the three skin cancers, once it starts to grow, it can spread rapidly. If detected and treated early enough, melanomas may be cured in about 75 per cent of cases.

The lighter your skin and eye colour, the more easily you will sunburn and the more likely you are to develop skin cancer. This likelihood increases with exposure to sunlight over both short periods - sunbathing on the beach to a point of, say, blistering - and long periods - pursuing an occupation, such as farming, in which many activities take place outdoors. Even moderate sunbathing after summer increases the odds that you will get skin cancer. The damage to the cells accumulates over time, so that people in their middle or later years are more likely to develop the disease.

The simplest way to avoid skin cancer is to reduce the exposure of you skin to the sun's cancer causing rays. Protect you skin by limiting your time in the sun and wear full clothing, those parts of the skin that are still exposed apply a good quality sunscreen to. The chemical composition of sunscreens block most of the sun's harmful rays.

Basal and squamous cell cancers have similar symptoms, while melanomas have their own special set of warning signs. What all skin cancers have in common, however, is change. That is what you should be on the lookout for. Basal and squamous cell cancers may start out small, rough patches of skin that are redder or paler that the surrounding skin. They can also start as tiny lumps or as small sores that bleed easily and seem to heal very slowly or not at all. If left untreated these tiny spots will soon grow and spread to surrounding tissue. Melanoma usually indicates its presence by altering the colour or appearance of a mole. Since melanoma involves cells that produce brown or black pigments, you should be aware of changes in dark spots or patches or moles and be on the lookout for new moles, moles that bleed, or any dark spot, new or old that changes colour, shape or size. Melanomas can be cured if treated in its early stage; those that go untreated may spread to other parts of the body, where they may attack vital organs.

Since skin cancer grows on the surface of the body, the first step in diagnosing them involves visual examination by a dermatologist. An experienced dermatologist can often determine whether a growth on the skin is or is not cancerous just by looking at it. If he suspects skin cancer he will remove a small sample and send it to a laboratory for examination under a microscope. There a pathologist will determine if the cells are skin cancer forming cells. If the samples reveal skin cancer, the dermatologist will remove the growth in one of a number of ways. Certain pre-cancerous skin problems may be treated by the application of a skin lotion containing anticancer drugs. In the case of basal or squamous cell cancer at an early stage, doctors remove the growth either surgically with a knife or by freezing it with liquid nitrogen. Melanomas, which are potentially more dangerous, are nearly always removed surgically together with surrounding tissue. Remember if the melanoma spreads to other parts of the body, other kinds of treatment such as chemotherapy - may be required. Radiotherapy, unfortunately, does not seem to be effective in treating melanoma. The key to treat this type of skin cancer is early detection.

Menopause Hormones

by Jodie Phillips

The main problem with menopause is that there is a drastic reduction in production of the female hormones. This is what causes all the physical discomfort and hot flushes in menopause. The popular line of treatment is to take menopause hormones externally. Substitution of menopause hormones can be in the form of oral medication or it can be local application in the form of topical ointments.

It is important to take these menopause hormones strictly under a doctors guidance. A doctor studies the patients symptoms and entire family history and then recommends the correct dose and combination of menopause hormones. This ensures that the patient is not at risk and is taking the right menopause hormone.

Women can take either one or both menopause hormones depending on their physical condition and age. Women who have undergone a hysterectomy must take both estrogen and progesterone. Such women have a greater risk of heart disease, blood clots and breast cancer. Women taking estrogen alone have a chance of suffering a stroke.

Menopause hormones give good relief from hot flushes and vaginal dryness. There is no proof that they prevent heart disease or improve ones general health. The benefits of menopause hormones vary with age. Women with early menopause greatly benefit from a short course of menopause hormones. Older women who take menopause hormones have a greater risk of developing breast cancer or tumors.

Younger women do reduce their chance of heart disease by taking menopause hormones. A comprehensive study to determine the benefits and risks of menopause hormones in younger women is underway. The results of this study can provide vital clues for improving the health and quality of life of menopausal women in the years to come.

There is a need to regulate the duration of menopause hormones. One must take estrogen daily and progesterone about twice a week. The exact dosage varies with the patients symptoms and medical condition. However, it is worth taking menopause hormones for a short time and not on a continuous basis.

A woman must regularly review the dosage of menopause hormones with her doctor. If the hot flushes have ceased, she must stop taking menopause hormones gradually. She can also shift to other localized medication like creams and patches. Menopause hormones are not a cure for age related problems like osteoporosis and heart disease. They are the last step in therapy when other medications have failed for these medical conditions.

Thus, a doctor must prescribe menopause hormones only after a detailed study of the patients medical record. Menopause hormones are not a magic cure for the symptoms of menopause, but they do gradually lessen some of its symptoms like hot flushes.

Female Hair Loss - What Every Woman Needs to Know

by Matt Adler

Female hair loss is commonly known as female pattern baldness, and is similar to the hair loss in men. The medical term is Alopecia, which means baldness, although it does not necessarily lead to complete baldness. The symptoms typically begin with gradual thinning of the hair, which is often seen after menopause.

The cause of female baldness is not just limited to menopause. Some women begin to see their hair thinning as early as puberty. This typically results from a hormonal imbalance. A change in hormones can often lead to female baldness. A hormone evaluation can tell you if hormones are the cause.

Giving birth or even stopping birth control pills can cause a loss as well. Other factors include physical or psychological stresses to the body. Nutritional changes, such as crash dieting or alcoholism can lead to Alopecia. Keep in mind that it may take several months to begin seeing the hair loss, after the cause.

So, what are the forms of female hair loss treatment? A good place to begin is by having a doctor can take a blood test which will display hormone levels, iron levels, and possible thyroid problems. Once the blood tests have been done, the doctor can further guide you to the treatment that is best for you. Rogaine is perhaps the most widely used medication for female hair loss, and provides the best results. Hormone replacement pills are helpful post-menopause. In extreme cases, hair transplant surgery can be a viable option.

The most important thing to remember is to try to remain positive throughout the treatments. It may take as long as a year to begin seeing results from any form of female hair loss treatment. Start by going to a doctor, and just remember, almost everyone is affected by hair loss at some point in their life.

Will Menopause Be A Thing Of The Past

by Carl Lanore

Italy is known for its food and fashion but who would have guessed theyd also have the jump on helping women potentially eliminate menopause and its associate symptoms using a common over-the-counter supplement melatonin.

This is great news for all women, and a huge relief to those trying to decide which side effects to gamble on as a result of only knowing about traditional prescription drug therapies.

A six month watershed study conducted by the Menopause Center at the Madonna Del Grazie Health Institute in Rome Italy, identified a clear relationship between nocturnal melatonin production, a hormone that makes us sleepy, and menopause.

Female subjects between the ages of 42 and 62 were given either a melatonin supplement or a placebo each night for six months. The subjects were either in the stages of perimenopause and experiencing missed menstrual cycles or post menopause and their menstrual cycles had ceased entirely.

Over the course of the six-month study an amazing thing occurred. The subjects who received the daily melatonin supplement resumed menstrual cyclicity. Yes even the women who were post menopausal regained their menstrual cycles.

Symptoms typically associated with menopause such as depression, sleep disorders, hot flushes, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, appetite disorders and tremors related to anxiety and depression were remarkably reversed or significantly improved.

Natural hormone levels were restored to youthful levels and the women receiving the melatonin became fertile again.

These results are nothing short of remarkable. While this is just a single study and should be viewed with that in mind, the potential ramifications are profound. If in fact the chicken-and-egg relationship between the onset of menopause and melatonin are the opposite as previously thought that it is the reduction in melatonin that heralds the onset of menopause and not the reverse then by simply supplementing with melatonin may completely reverse menopause. At least that is what the results of this study are pointing to.

This would most likely eliminate the need for hormone replacement therapy entirely as a transitional step to menopause since women would continue to produce youthful levels of hormones on their own. It would also greatly impact several segments of the pharmaceutical industry anti-depressants, anti-anxiety and non-hormonal osteoporosis drugs that are now being hawked by celebrities like Sally Fields.

Imagine a world where women no longer have to fear fragile bones, or that their careers will be interrupted by the lack of energy or mental clarity suffered during menopause. How about mothers regularly giving birth at 75? Perhaps this will be a reality in the near future. Well just have to wait and see.

In the meantime what will be more interesting is how physicians handle this news. This study was published in December of 2005. Will it be repressed or discounted? Remember, melatonin is an over-the-counter sleep aid and doesnt require a prescription. The pharmaceutical industry wont profit from this potentially wonderful discovery. That is unless they address it as they did the cholesterol-lowering effects of the common B vitamin - Niacin. They created an extended release version of an already perfect over-the-counter supplement called NiaSpan so that physicians would have something to prescribe. Most physicians are reluctant to recommend over-the-counter supplements citing purity is not guaranteed.

Youll have to educate yourself about your options when addressing menopause. Melatonin may prove to be a valuable aid for some women and may be worth examining for those of you beginning to see the symptoms of menopause.

Menopause: Moods, Hot flashes and Dryness Oh My!

by Barbara C. Phillips

A few years ago, the results of the Womens Health Initiative sent women across the country to their medicine cabinets where they promptly grabbed their bottles or packets of hormones and threw them away only to later experience some unpleasant effects.

Today we remain uncertain as to the absolute risk factors one may face when taking hormone replacement therapy or estrogen replacement therapy. While many women sail through menopause without a drop of sweat from a hot flash, others do experience varying degrees of discomfort.

In my practice, I often see women sometimes as early as their late 30s or early 40s - who seek care with any degree of the following:

Insomnia, hot flashes, night sweats, moodiness, depression, decreased libido, vaginal dryness, heart palpitations, concerns regarding osteoporosis, urinary changes and fears regarding memory and dementia.

Many women are leery of using medication to treat something considered a natural part of aging. However, they still wonder what they can do.

More often than not paying attention to dietary triggers (such as coffee), increasing ones physical activity, stress reduction techniques (such as visualizations) and acupuncture will often work wonders without taking anything extra.

For women with severe symptoms, who want something more, we explore options such as bio-identical hormones, and herbal products such as black cohosh, and traditional hormone therapy.

Its important to understand that hormones are hormones regardless if they are bio-identical or not. These substances and indeed any herbal/nutritional product must always be used with caution medications of any sort can be helpful as well as harmful.

As always, its recommended you discuss your concerns and options with your health care provider. While not all providers are aware of the many herbal and nutritional preparations available today, they can help you explore what to look for as well as what to avoid.

Menopause Weight Gain

by Kevin Stith

Weight gain in menopausal women, particularly in the abdominal area, is associated with decreased levels of the hormone estrogen. Fat accumulates around the stomach area, not around the hips and thighs as it does at a younger age. The exact mechanism of this weight gain is not fully understood. Also, with increasing age, there is more conversion of muscle tissue into fat and a tendency to gain weight. Women going through menopause may become less physically active, or change eating habits. Metabolism also slows down with increasing age. All these factors contribute to cause weight gain in women soon after menopause. Contrary to popular belief, hormone replacement therapy has not been shown to cause weight gain; it may actually have a protective effect.

Weight gain in the abdominal area should be kept in check, as it is associated with an increased chance of developing heart disease. This is accentuated by higher cholesterol levels in post-menopausal women. Weight gain may also lead to reduced physical activity, which in turn can result in further loss of muscle mass and weakening of the bones. Other conditions associated with weight gain are high blood pressure and diabetes. It is therefore important to prevent excess weight gain after menopause.

Steps women can take to limit weight gain are moderate exercise for at least 30 minutes each day and eating low-fat and high-fiber foods such as fruit and vegetables. It is important to avoid crash and fad diets as such diets result in more muscle loss and slow down the bodys metabolism. Foods rich in fats, such as chocolate and fast food, should be sparingly consumed or avoided. Regular contact with a physician, dietician or other health care provider can improve chances of successful weight maintenance or weight loss.

Menopause provides detailed information about menopause, early menopause, male menopause, menopause and osteoporosis and more. Menopause is the sister site of Chronic Insomnia.

Managing Menopausal Symptoms - Can Supplements Help

by Kerris Samson

At some stage all women will go through it the menopause. But all women should be aware that in fact the menopause is not a death sentence or something unnatural, although it may feel like it at times. In fact it is part of natures great big plan (for better or worse). Most women will experience the onset of the menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, and in some cases it can begin before or after this period, but the range of 45 to 55 is pretty typical in most cases.

The menopause happens when a womans body begins to experience rapid changes in the chemical composition of the bodys reproductive system. At this stage the body will no longer be producing eggs in the ovaries and so the production of progesterone and estrogen will begin to decrease as well. Because of the hormonal changes in her body a woman will begin to notice a number of symptoms relating to this matter such as increased or decreased appetite, foggy or even hazy thoughts/thinking, hot flushes, anger, sadness, depression and other emotional changes. Yet there are a number of supplements which can help to control these symptoms and certainly more and more evidence is being uncovered that is proving the benefits of people taking supplements as part of their diets, and certainly for women during the menopause these benefits are even greater.

The menopause has traditionally been treated using modern medicines such as Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Although on the surface this therapy seems to make a lot of sense because a womans body is no longer producing enough estrogen and progesterone, then taking pills to make up for this deficiency seems the sensible idea. However, recent studies have shown that this form of treatment may be potentially dangerous to some people and there seems to be an increased risk of them developing other diseases such as cancer whilst using this treatment.

Whilst taking supplements is a low risk treatment which has provided millions of women around the world with the much needed relief from the symptoms and certainly women who do not want to HRT because of its associated risks should look at some of the essential supplements provided below in helping with the menopause.

1. Promensil. There have been studies carried out on this supplement for several years now and it has been proven that it is effective in providing relief to those suffering from the menopause. It is highly effective in limiting the frequency and the strength of the hot flushes that constantly trouble women during the menopause.

2. Black Cohosh. This plant has been utilized by Native Americans for centuries and the plant actually functions without estrogen being present. It provides the patient with a wide spectrum treatment for those who suffer from anguish during the menopause, and there have been several clinical trials carried out on which show it provides relief to a number of other menopausal related symptoms.

3. Calcium. This is also another important supplement for those suffering from menopause. One of the major effects suffered by women during the menopause is aging and a loss in bone density. Thus a lack of calcium will cause the womans bones to become weak and brittle, but by taking a calcium supplement they can help to relieve this problem. In addition calcium contains a number of other minerals and vitamins which can help to maintain and improve a womans health.

4. Red Clover. This supplement has had extensive research carried out on it, and it has been found that it is high in phytoestrogens. This has been found not only to provide the woman with relief from menopausal symptoms, but also helps to contribute to them having healthy bones as well.

5. Estroven. This is another supplement which is high in phytoestrogens and has proven to be effective in fighting the severity of menopausal symptoms. In studies carried out it has been shown that this supplement can either alleviate or help improve such symptoms felt by woman such as hot flushes, insomnia and libido (sex drive).

So therefore the use of supplements in a womans diet is very important in the battle against the menopause and it is wise that they should educate themselves on the variety of natural supplements that are available. This will then provide them with the natural relief that they are looking for.

Kerris Samson a work from home, who has been looking at ways of improving her 12 year old daughters diet over the years, because of her dislike of fruit and vegetables. Has been carrying out extensive research into supplements for both children and adults and has set up a site dedicated to this topic. If you would like to learn more please visit www.supplements.avonmay.info.
